Terry Bartelt, Fox Valley Technical College
Terry Bartelt has been an instructor at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wisconsin since 1981. In 1996, he received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant that supported the development instrumentation and process control courses at the college. In 2005, he received a second NSF grant to produce learning objects for the advanced courses in the Electromechanical Technology program. He has authored three textbooks, "Industrial Control Electronics- Devices, Systems, and Applications" 3rd Ed, Delmar learning 2006; "Instrumentation and Process Control" Delmar Learning 2007; "Digital Electronics-An Integrated Laboratory Approach" Prentice Hall 2002.
Ann Blackman, Convergence Technology Center, TX
Ann manages student recruitment, professional faculty development events, community and academic relations. Projects include planning and implementing conferences/workshops/meetings, advising students, serving as a liaison with various community groups, and coordinating activities. She also supervises the lab assistants, develops brochures and coordinates the marketing and implementation of student recruitment events, technical staff development workshops and CTC community activities.

Ann has extensive experience in program, staff and volunteer development and training. She is an accomplished event planner with a background of not-for-profit management and fundraising. Her writing experience encompasses the development of staff and operations manuals, long-range plan goals and objectives, statistical analysis, grant applications and promotional pieces.
Julie Hietschold, Orange Coast College, CA
Julie Hietschold is a native Texan that has been working in the IT Industry for over 22 years and has been teaching for over 12 of those years. She has taught classes in Novell, Cisco, Microsoft and for various CompTIA certifications with her expertise being in Microsoft. For the past 10 years, she has worked in the global Windows support team as a Sr. Technical Engineer with the last 3 specializing in security.
Gregory Hyman, Nortel Technology Solutions Academy
Gregory Hyman is the Nortel American Manager for the Nortel Technology
Solutions Academy (NTSA). The NTSA was launched in March 2007 and
already has 40 participating institutions worldwide. Greg is also the
Nortel Press Product Manager in charge of the textbooks developed and
distributed by Nortel Press. Nortel Press is a new initiative by Nortel
which will provide professional textbooks that will be used within NTSA
courses and will be available for purchase via the Nortel Press website
as well as through major book sellers. Nortel Press will launch in
March 2008. Greg has a diverse background within customer service in
various industries over the past 15 years. Greg also was involved in
end-user technical training for nearly 5 years. He received his MS in
Industrial and Organizational Psychology in 2005 and was hired to work
within Nortel's certification group in 2006.
James Jones, Photisis Consulting, CA
James Jones is a Consultant with City College of San Francisco, assisting
with network projects and developing the Institute for Convergence of
Optical and Network Systems (ICONS) with the Computer Networking and
Information Technology Department. Previously, James managed a consulting
organization that trained Cisco Engineers in optical technologies; he was a
manager at Metro Ethernet pioneer Yipes communications; he had Finance and
Strategic Marketing roles at SBC; and he was a regulated utility services
cost management consultant. James has an MBA from the University of Hawaii.
Karl Kapp, Bloomsburg University, PA
Karl is a consultant, speaker, scholar, and expert on the convergence of learning, technology and business operations. His background teaching e-learning classes, knowledge of adult learning theory, and experience training CEOs and front line staff provides him with a unique perspective on organizational learning. He was recently voted as one of TrainingIndustry.com's 2007 Top 20 Most Influential Training Professionals. His experience with technology companies and high-tech initiatives provides him with insights into the future of technology. Joshua Kaserman, SUNY Institute of Technology
Joshua Kaserman is a Graduate Student at the State University of New York Institute of Technology in the Telecommunications B.S./M.S. Program. He was recently the Student Project Manager for the Spring 2007 Utica Wireless Project, managing twenty graduate and undergraduate students broken into three distinct groups. Recently, Josh finished an internship at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Utica, NY where he deployed an enterprise network management system to monitor 1300+ devices.
Dennis Kirlin, Principal Investigator, Midwest Center for Information Technology, NE
Dennis provides oversight for the MCIT Center, focusing on cultivating continued involvement of business leaders and college personnel from the MCIT colleges. He represents MCIT and presents at Regional and National Conferences and conventions. He is the former Dean of Business and Information Technology at Iowa Western Community College. During his 25 years as a community college IT educator and administrator, Dennis has gained extensive experience in developing business/education partnerships for customized IT training. In addition to-on campus activities, he developed teams of adjunct faculty to work at customer sites preparing more than 2000 employees with the necessary computer skills to meet the challenging needs of their companies.
A CSP and former manager with Sperry Univac, he has served in a consulting capacity for over 40 years. Dennis graduated from Lesley University with a M.Ed. in Computers in Education and with a B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from Creighton University He is a member of the Association of Computing Machinery.
Hilary Mason, Johnson & Wales University
Hilary Mason is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science and New Media departments at Johnson & Wales University. She holds degrees from Grinnell College and Brown University, and has wide research interests, from web applications to data analysis and virtual worlds. In 2005, she co-created Virtual Morocco, an academic service-learning project in Second Life. She currently runs slmetrics.com, a service for virtual worlds metrics and analytics, and has collaborated on multiple scientific and commercial development projects in virtual worlds. She can be found as "Ann Enigma" in Second Life.
Eric Meurell, Systems Engineer, Wireless Products, Belden
Eric provides technical support for the Belden sales team and their customers for Belden WLAN
products, applications and installations. Prior to his position at Belden, Eric worked in
various Senior Engineering roles at Azimuth Systems, Inc., a leading provider of wireless data
communications test solutions. Eric has over 20 years of experience from the Semiconductor
Test, Datacom, Telecom and Wireless Markets. He is based out of San Jose, California.
Robert Mortenson, University of Nebraska at Omaha
Jeff Palmer, Orange Coast College, CA
Jeff Palmer is an adopted Texan (he got there as fast as he could) that has been working in the IT Industry for 40 years and has been teaching for more than 12 years. His teaching started with Novell, then Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, and a host of programming languages. Most of his 40 year career has been spent designing, developing, building, and troubleshooting networks. He is currently the Senior Systems Architect for a large financial organization.
Mohammad Razani, New York City College of Technology - CUNY
Dr. Razani has extensive experience in various fields of technologies spanning from Satellite Communications to Microwave Remote Sensing and Information Technology. Having received BS-EE and MS-EE from Kansas State University and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas, he has utilized his education in various related technologies within the last two decades. Such experience includes years of teaching and research positions in New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York, where he is presently Associate Professor and Chairman of the Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department. Dr. Razani has published numerous technical papers and has written a book on "Fundamentals of Satellite Communications" and is working on another book named "Space Technologies, a Promising Platform for Future Achievements." He has also served as Vice Chairman of several Study Groups at International Telecommunication Union (ITU), where he had an active role for more than 12 years during eighties and early nineties. He has coordinated and participated in the development of new telecommunications courses grouped into three categories offered at City Tech. and have submitted another course proposal to City Tech on IP Technology and Applications. Dr. Razani is the recipient of the CUNY Collaborative Research Grant, proposal "Flexible Numerical Radiative Transfer Algorithms for the analysis of Ground Based Sky Radiance Data and Satellite Based Polarized Sun Reflectance Data in Aerosol Monitoring."
Randy Reusser, Gateway Technical College, WI
Randy has been involved with technology (IT) since 1980. He received a
Diploma in Electronic Servicing from Milwaukee Area Technical College,
an Associate of Science Degree as an Electronic Technician from Gateway
Technical College (Graduate Scholastic Award), a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Business Administration from Carthage College (Suma Cum
Laude), and an MBA in Business Administration from Marquette University.
Randy is currently employed at Gateway Technical College, Sturtevant, WI, as Electronics, IT and Telecommunications Instructor. He also works with outside Companies including Lynch Diversified Vehicles and Ocean Spray. Randy is a certified trainer for Belden and BICSI.
Randy has experience in Electronics, IT, Telecommunications, and Technical Management. Prior to his current employment, he has worked as a Team Leader, Technical Services Manager, Electronic Technician/Assistant Manager, Service Manager, and Electronic Technician. He has published 11 (eleven) Publications and Passed or Earned over 50 (fifty) Technical Certifications.
Alan Rowland, CompTIA
Alan Rowland is the Business Development Manager for CompTIA's Education
to Careers (E2C) program that serves the academic and not for profit
communities. He works directly with schools and teachers to assist them
with utilizing their CompTIA member benefits and facilitating the
certification process.
Alan joined CompTIA in 2003 after a nearly 17 year career at Ivy Tech State College in Indianapolis. In his previous role he served as a computer technology instructor for 13 years, primarily teaching certification curriculum from Cisco, Novell and Microsoft. He was also the director of the Ivy Tech Workforce Certification program for over 3 years. Alan as also served as a member of the Novell Education Advisory Council and the Certiport Academic Advisory Council. Alan is also very familiar with K-12 education issues, having served as a member of the Board of Education for a school system on the northeast side of Indianapolis.
Tim Ryan, City College of San Francisco
Mr. Ryan is the Network Manager in the Information Technology Services
Department at City College of San Francisco. He is responsible for the
design, implementation and support of communications and computing
services across 10 campuses. Mr. Ryan is also the Co-PI on a NSF grant
which established the Institute for Convergence of Optical and Network
Systems (ICONS) and is currently developing new curriculum for the City
College Computer Networking and Information Technology Department.
Prior to employment with City College, Mr. Ryan was the Lead Network Engineer with Yipes Communications, a Metro Ethernet services provider. Mr. Ryan holds a BSEE degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and a Masters of Science in Information Systems from the University of San Francisco.
Peter Saflund, The Saflund Institute, WA
Peter's career spans 35 years as technician, engineer, business owner, community college teacher, dean, CIO, publisher, producer, researcher, speaker, instructional designer and technology expert. He is a recognized leader in defining emerging technologies, skill standards development, and in shaping technology education in support of technology workforce development. Peter is former associate director of NWCET, the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies where from 1998 to 2004 he helped shape the direction of the Center and brought many of its achievements into reality. As special advisor to National Skill Standards Board (NSSB) on Information Technology Skill Standards construction and definition, he helped develop the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Skill Standards and collaborated on their national validation. He co-authored a major congressionally commissioned report by National Academies of Science (NRC) on Information Technology workforce issues and national policy, and is probably best known for his role as publisher and research director for the internationally recognized NWCET Skill Standards for Information Technology. Today Peter has his own practice, evaluating NSF ATE projects and centers, and researching technology workforce needs and trends for educators and industry.
Kim Smith, New York City College of Technology - CUNY
In May of 2007, Kim received a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications and Wireless Communications degree from THE CUNY BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM, the home college being New York City College of Technology, where she is presently working as a teaching assistant. She is continuing her education at City College of New York, working towards a Ph.D. in the area of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.Ê As a member ofÊthe Communication Society of the New York Region 1 section, IEEE, she has played an active role in organizing their seminars in the New York City Region. Kim has over five years experience handling technology, engineering and networking projects. She is proficient using CES Instruments and testing security devices. Kim has previously worked with the New York City Transit Authority in the Electronics Maintenance Division, where she worked with Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) using Visual Basic 6 to program signal fixtures. She analyzed circuits and wrote software for test equipment used to monitor and operate signals.
Gordon F. Snyder, Jr., National Center for Telecommunications Technologies, MA
Gordon F. Snyder, Jr. is Executive Director and Principal Investigator for NCTT at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC), where he also manages curriculum development for networking. At STCC he helped develop the Verizon Next Step program and now serves as the New England telecommunications curriculum coordinator for the program. He is the author of four engineering and engineering technology textbooks and has over 14 years of consulting experience in the field of communications and LAN/WAN design. He has served on several local and national boards including the Microsoft Community & Technical College Advisory Council, the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council and the National Skill Standards Board (NSSB) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Voluntary Partnership representing the telecommunications, computer, and information industry sector. He currently chairs the Institute for Telecommunications Technologies Board at Cuyamaca College, El Cajon, California, the NSF National Center for Optics and Photonics Education Board in Waco, TX and the Convergence Technology Center Board in the Dallas Fort Worth. TX metroplex. Closer to home he chairs the Technology Enterprise Council (TEC), a regional, industry-led organization working hand-in-hand with academic institutions and other non-profit organizations to advance the growth and success of companies driven by information and communications technologies in Southern Vermont, Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. In this region he also sits on the Regional Technology Coucil (RTC) Board of Directors and the RTC Executive Committee. He also writes a bi-monthly technology column for the Spanish newspaper La Prensa. In 2001 he was selected as one of the top fifteen technology faculty in the United States by Microsoft Corporation and the American Association of Community Colleges and in 2004 was selected as the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council Workforce Development Leader of the year. His popular weekly blogs and podcasts, done in collaboration with Mike Qaissaunee are read and listened to by thousands.
Helen Sullivan, Convergence Technology Center, TX
Helen Sullivan has been Director of the Convergence Technology Center, the
ATE Regional Center funded by a grant from the National Science
Foundation, for the past four years at Collin County Community College in
Frisco, TX. She was the director on two prior NSF-funded project grants:
The North Texas Regional Technology Consortium, and Advancing Careers in
Technology and Science.
Helen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics with a concentration in technical writing from the University of Texas at Austin. She has done graduate work in journalism at the University of North Texas and has completed a certificate series in Project Management at CCCCD.
She has over 15 years project and program management experience, most recently as Director of Documentation and Training at Nortel, where her organization provided support for 64 network-based telecom projects. Her previous career in journalism netted awards from the Associated Press, Texas Press Women, Northeast Texas Press Association and four School Bell Awards from the Texas State Teachers Association. She is a conference speaker and facilitator.
Jeanne L. Surface, AIM Institute, NE
Jeanne position at AIM consists of research, and project management of a National Science Foundation Grant for Advanced Technological education. The grant serves 4 states and ten community colleges in the region. She has had a distinguished career as a professor and administrator in both elementary /secondary education and higher education. Jeanne also is a columnist for Rural Roots, a publication for the Rural School and Community Trust which is published bi-monthly. Her column is titled, "Diary of a Rural School Leader."
Barbara Washburn, Springfield Technical Community College, MA
Professor Barbara Washburn holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Western New England College, a MS in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in laser electro-optics from Tufts University and a MS in Adult Learning from University of Connecticut. She is Department Co-Chair for the Electronics Systems Group at Springfield Technical Community College and teaches courses in the laser electro-optics technology and telecommunications technology programs.
She has been a major contributor to distance learning course offerings in her department. She works closely with the Gender Equity Department of Massachusetts to host workshops and explorations in photonics technology to minority and girls in the middle and high schools.
Prior to coming to STCC, Professor Washburn was an Assistant Professor of Engineering and Program Coordinator for the Laser Fiber Optics Technology Program at Massachusetts Bay Community College, where she was responsible for developing the curriculum and laboratories of the Laser Fiber Optics Technology program. Prior to joining the faculty at Mass Bay, she worked in the laser optics industry for eight years, as lead Optical design engineer for Raytheon. She was a co-principle investigator for the NSF-funded Photon and Photon2 projects with NEBHE and a co-principal investigator in the NSF-funded ComTech project at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, which developed photonics instructional materials at the middle and high school level.
